Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century - and a lover in another... On holiday with her husband just after the war, she walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands and into a violent skirmish taking place in 1743.

A wartime nurse, Claire can deal with bloody wounds that face her, it is harder to deal with the knowledge that she is in Jacobite Scotland and the carnage of Culloden is looming. Marooned amid the passion and violence, the superstition, the shifting allegiances and the fervent loyalties, Claire is in terrible danger from Jacobites and Redcoats - and from the shock of her own desire for a courageous renegade.

Diana Gabaldon definitely had a smash hit when she wrote Outlander! Strong characters, a heart-stopping love story and nail biting Scottish adventure set the scene for a fantastical ride. Claire Beauchamp, a WWII British nurse is our time traveller. She is practical, intelligent, witty and sensual. Jamie Fraser, the central male character, is the type of man every woman dreams of. A Scottish highlander with superhuman strength, cheeky, gallant and brave. The unlikely couple are thrown together by a strange twist of fate and what develops is an ironic love affair between two people, two centuries apart. Skirmishes, witch hunts, torture, murder and patriotism are a few of the potent ingredients in this gripping tale, an emotional rollercoaster of laughter, tears and joy...
