Catherine de Medici, born into a world of politics, religion and a touch of the mystic. Torn away from her home of Florence at a tender age, she learns what it takes to become a survivor.

Married to the second son of the French king, Francois I, she must face the realisation that another woman holds the heart of her husband and that she must swallow her dignity if France is to have an heir.

Life places many obstacles in her path and as she strives to understand the riddles of her clairvoyant, Nostradamus, the answers are sometimes too late. Left at the age of forty with six children and a kingdom in turmoil, Catherine must rely on her sheer will, determination and instinct if she is to protect those she loves and place a descendant on the throne.

Wow, what a book! I could hardly tear myself away as I embarked on the tumultous journey that was Catherine's life. C W Gortner brings history to life with a vibrancy that is easily absorbed. Beautifully written, and so quick paced, each chapter revealing a new twist or turn. We meet Catherine as a young girl, already a pawn to the higher beings of power . Alone and without family Catherine is married to the Valois family and it is here where she dedicates her life to France and to the Valois dynasty. We empathise with Catherine and feel the pain of her struggle as she teeters on a knife's edge and bears the consequences of her decisions.
